SUMMARY:Empowering Research: A Guide to UBC Faculty of Medicine's Data Management Platforms
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, speakers from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Digital Solutions Research Technology team will give a high-level overview of all the data management resources available for researchers at VCHRI. They will introduce platforms such as FoM REDcap for electronic data collection\, OpenSpecimen for biobanking and Microsoft PowerBI for data visualization. Attendees will also learn about interesting use cases\, from observational registries to research registries and everything in between\, hosted on FoM data platforms. \nLearning objectives\nIn this workshop you will learn: \n– Introduction to FoM research data platforms available to VCHRI researchers and their teams \n– Overview of data management best practices related to FoM research data platforms \n– Research data management support services available from the FoM data management team \nThis workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills\, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research. \nAbout the speakers\nKenny Hammond has been working in medical education and research since 2009. In 2015\, he began working with digital solutions and became manager of the research data services team in 2022. Kenny strives to engage with clients to find technological solutions to support their research needs. He has a Master in Public Health and a Graduate Diploma in Community Health\, both from Memorial University.\n  \n  \n  \n  \nAshley McKerrow is an experienced data management professional with over 12 years of experience supporting health research. She began her career at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute where she built a successful team to support full research data services. Under her leadership\, the data management team facilitated hundreds of active research studies and is recognized by peers as a standard for data management processes and documentation.

DESCRIPTION:GrasPods presents the Bennett Distinguised lEcture: Vaccines for Cancer Prevention and Interception by Dr. Olivia (Olja) J. Finn from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. \nOver three decades of tumor antigen discovery yielded a large number of tumor antigens that led to the development of therapeutic cancer vaccines designed to slow the growth of primary tumors or metastases. However\, clinical trials failed to demonstrate beneficial effects of therapeutic vaccines\, and studies of the tumor microenvironment revealed multiple mechanisms of tumor-induced immune suppression that compromised vaccine efficacy. \nWe are using the same vaccines in healthy\, immunocompetent individuals to prevent cancer or intercept progression from pro-cancer to cancer. Results of the clinical trials will be presented that test a vaccine based on the tumor antigen MUCI for the prevention of colon\, lung\, and breast cancer. The focus of this intake (SIP8) is to support genomics research related to the impacts of climate change on human health. Climate change is already negatively impacting human health in many ways\, and health risks are predicted to increase as global warming continues. Higher temperatures\, shifts in precipitation patterns\, more frequent and intense heat waves\, and weather events deprive people of clean air\, fresh water\, a safe food supply\, and can influence the prevalence and distribution of infectious diseases. \nThis session will provide an overview of Sector Innovation Program Guidelines\, how to apply for Intake 08 and answer any questions you may have.

After introducing these concepts and examples\, Samantha will then go through a couple of examples of how she has applied these strategies to improve an example figure from her previous publications\, as well as some tips that she has learned along the way. DESCRIPTION:SBME Seminar: Challenges toward ultrahigh-speed proteomics with high-sensitivity\, high-depth and high-robustness – Dr. Yasushi Ishihama\nUnderstanding proteins and protein complexes as molecules responsible for biological functions is an essential step in understanding biological homeostasis and the diseases that result from its disruption. Although proteome sequencers based on LC/MS/MS as a core technology have been rapidly developed\, they have not yet fully met the expectations of the research community. We have focused on accelerating the LC/MS/MS sequencing technology and have investigated various methods to complete proteome sequencing in about 1 minute. By optimizing various parameters under capillary LC flow rates\, we have succeeded in achieving the protein identification number of >3000 from 100 ng of HeLa lysates in 1000 samples per day. SUMMARY:SBME Seminar: Long Non-Coding RNAs in Pluripotency\, Development\, and Disease
DESCRIPTION:Seminar’s Abstract:\n“Well-regulated gene expression networks are responsible for establishing and maintaining cellular states during development. Of the early cell states present in development\, pluripotency is the cellular state that has the potential to derive all cell lineages of the embryo. Mutations in genes associated with pluripotency often lead to abnormal development and embryo lethality\, but much of the focus relating to these genes has been on protein-coding genes. However\, the last decade has seen the rise of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) as novel players in the control of pluripotency\, development\, and several diseases including cancer and neurological disorders. As such\, our major goal is to understand the molecular mechanisms and functional interactions of lncRNAs in modulating cellular states. In this talk\, I will discuss how these lncRNA interactions influence mRNA splicing\, gene expression\, and ultimately cell fate\, but more specifically in the context of pluripotency.” \n\nDr. Samer Hussein’s Bio:\nDr. Samer Hussein is an associate professor and researcher at Université Laval and its affiliated Cancer Research Center. Dr. Hussein completed his Ph.D. in Neurological Sciences at McGill University\, Montréal\, Canada\, and his post-doctoral training at the University of Helsinki\, Finland\, and later at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute in Toronto\, Canada. He has published seminal work in the field of reprogramming demonstrating several key findings on how reprogramming to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) affects the chromatin state\, genetic stability\, and gene expression of cells undergoing this process of induced cell fate change. \nHis team now focuses on understanding the molecular underpinnings governing cell fate decision during embryonic stem cell (ESC) differentiation and during the evolution of cancer\, more specifically Glioblastoma. They use several bioinformatics and sequencing approaches\, such as long read RNA sequencing\, and ESC differentiation models\, such as human cerebral organoids\, to understand the molecular mechanisms and functional interactions of long non-coding RNAs during development and cancer. \nLocation:\nDMCBH 101 LT + Zoom

In the Winter of 2019\, Mathew pivoted towards entrepreneurship by launching the Guelph Chapter of the Science to Business Network\, a non-profit event-based networking group that connects academics with non-academic career paths and mentors. In the Winter of 2020\, Mathew formally launched his post-academic career with the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) as a Venture Manager\, where he reviewed over 600 applications from deep tech seed-stage startups from around the world and worked with 30+ health tech startups as they participated in the CDL mentorship program. Over his 4+ years at CDL he’s managed and trained a diverse team both as the Associate Director of Health at CDL-Toronto\, and now as the Head of Venture Recruitment for CDL’s international network of 13 sites and 33 cohorts\, which admit 675+ seed-stage startups. \nMore about CDL: The Creative Destruction Lab is a philanthropic organization offering a comprehensive 5-day mentorship program for pre-seed to seed stage science and technology startups. Unlike programs designed for general businesses\, CDL focuses sharply on ventures where their core differentiator is an innovation in science or technology. CDL operates a network of 13 international sites\, each running a different collection of specialized venture cohorts (called streams). Each “stream” strategically combines mentors (entrepreneurs\, investors\, scientists\, and economists) and admitted ventures into technology\, vertical\, or market-specific pools to optimize venture-mentor pairings. The program is competitive\, meaning only ventures who receive an endorsement from a mentor (and an investment of that mentor’s time to support the founder) are invited back to subsequent mentorship sessions. CDL doesn’t require equity or payment from the startups; it is a program dedicated to nurturing innovation without a financial burden on the participating ventures. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive workshop with artistic scientist Martin Krzywinski where he will use his critique by redesign technique on images submitted by CEEHRC trainees to show us all how to create effective scientific illustrations. \nMartin will present this workshop in person in Room 101\, Michael Smith Laboratories\, University of British Columbia. \nWe will also have in person viewing hubs in: \n\nRoom 6001 of the McGill Genome Centre\, McGill University\nRoom EM1.3509 at the Research Institute\, McGill University Health Centre\nRoom LC4054 in the Longwood Center\, Dana Farber\nRoom1007 in the Roger Guindon Building\, University of Ottawa.\n\nFor those who cannot attend in person we will broadcast the workshop live over Zoom. \nThe workshop is free to attend with refreshments and snacks provided to those attending in person events.

Join us at Upstart & Crow on Sunday\, June 9 at 7 p.m. to learn about getting LIT with author\, Harvard Medical School professor and renowned bioinspirationalist\, Jeff Karp. Karp will be in conversation with Upstart & Crow cofounder\, Ian Gill. \nIn his new book\, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature’s Playbook to Energize Your Brain\, Spark Ideas and Ignite Action (William Morrow)\, Karp teaches us to harness the vital wisdom and power of nature to place us into a lit state. Lit is a life magnifier\, a heightened state of awareness that drives curiosity\, connection\, and energy. In short: being lit takes us off autopilot and helps us stay alert\, present\, and fully engaged. \nDiagnosed with learning differences and ADHD at a young age\, Karp persisted through nearly insurmountable struggles. After discovering that he could think about thinking at age seven\, he became his own science experiment\, tapping into the lit state through trial and error to achieve hyper-awareness and explore his curiosity\, creativity and connection to nature. Books will be available for purchase. \nAbout the author: \nJeff Karp\, Ph.D.\, is an acclaimed mentor and biomedical engineering professor at Harvard Medical School and MIT\, a Distinguished Chair at Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, and a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. He has dedicated his research to bioinspired medical problem-solving\, and his lab’s technologies have led to the formation of twelve companies. The technologies they have developed include a tissue glue that can seal holes inside a beating heart; targeted therapy for osteoarthritis\, Crohn’s disease\, and brain disorders; “smart needles” that automatically stop when they reach their target; a nasal spray that neutralizes pathogens; and immunotherapy approaches to annihilate cancer. Dr. Karp is also head of innovation at Geoversity\, Nature’s University\, a rainforest conservancy located in one of the top biodiversity hotspots in the world. He was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Undergraduate Mentor among all faculty at MIT and the top graduate student mentor of Harvard-MIT students. This community event invites students\, researchers\, industry\, and other biomedical engineering enthusiasts to participate in an exciting day of research presentations and networking. \nAbout the Symposium\nOur keynote speaker this year is Dr. George Church\, geneticist and founder of Synthetic Biology at Wyss Institute\, Harvard University. The Symposium will also feature talks from other leading biomedical engineering researchers\, as well as a lunch and poster session highlighting the incredible work of our SBME graduate students. \nWe invite biomedical students from UBC and beyond to participate in our Symposium Poster Session! This is a great opportunity for trainees to present their research to a wide audience of researchers and industry partners.
