DESCRIPTION:In this session\, the Biobanking and Biospecimen Research Services (BBRS) co-leaders\, Sheila O’Donoghue and Tamsin Tarling\, will present an overview of the available biobanking resources\, such as best practices and standards\, educational programs\, biobank locators (for finding existing collections of biospecimens for research projects) and BBRS’s free consulting services. This interactive session will also give attendees an opportunity to ask questions about ethical issues\, as well as about starting up\, maintaining and expanding a research biobank. \nThe event will also feature a discussion moderated by Michelle Storms\, Director\, VCHRI Clinical Research Unit. \nLearning objectives\nIn this workshop you will learn: \n– the value of utilizing biobanks in research \n– the best practices and standards in biobanking \n– the ethical issues commonly associated with biobanks \nThis workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills\, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research. \nAbout the speakers\nSheila O’Donoghue is the co-leader of the BBRS unit at BC Cancer and is also responsible for the national Canadian Tissue Repository Network (CTRNet) biobank certification and education programs. Prior to her current roles\, she was the project manager for the BC BioLibrary and spent more than 15 years managing national and local clinical trials. SUMMARY:xChange 2024
DESCRIPTION:The BC xChange event\, co-hosted by the EWB UBC Chapter at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability at the University of British Columbia\, will focus on building a sustainable future for communities in BC through inclusive climate solutions. With the focus on communities in BC who lack the resources in achieving the 2030 goals\, this conference allows to help engage in conversations that would assist marginalized communities to help achieve the 2030 climate goals. \nThe BC region event will tackle what an accelerated adoption and use of renewable/clean energy\, decarbonization programs and initiatives\, and clean tech innovations generally\, means to BC communities. What policy\, regulatory\, and incentive environments are required to ensure market forces are not the primary drivers of equitable advancements in areas and communities that would be seen as less profitable for this transition? Will remote\, marginalized\, and Indigenous communities have a partnership position in this critical transition? Will Indigenous groups be sidelined in the planning and execution of any comprehensive strategy? How will clean tech\, net zero and decarbonization initiatives\, and renewable/clean energy meet BC’s future energy needs while driving an equitable achievement of 2030 goals? This inclusive event will feature expert panelists from all sectors\, break-out sessions\, interactive booths and displays\, and networking opportunities. \nWe’re excited to welcome attendees from across BC and Canada to dive further into this conversation. Come join us at the BC xChange for a day of learning\, collaboration\, networking\, refreshments and more! \nLearn more.

SUMMARY:BioBasics 101: The Biology of Biotech for the Non-Scientist
DESCRIPTION:LSBC\, in partnership with Biotech Primer\, is pleased to present BioBasics 101: The Biology of Biotech for the Non-Scientist. This intensive two-day ‘master course’ is designed to help non-scientists gain a foundational understanding of the science that forms the backbone of biopharma so that you can converse more effectively with colleagues\, clients\, regulators\, and scientists. \nOn day one\, instructor and biotech consultant Kevin Curran\, Ph.D.\, will focus on the function of DNA\, RNA\, proteins\, and cell signaling and how each interacts in both healthy and diseased tissue. \nDay two will build on your newfound molecular biology knowledge\, including a more in-depth look at genetic disease and how genetic engineering is used to create personalized medicine options for patients. \nThe course concludes with a survey of small molecule drugs\, biologics\, and vaccines and explains how each mitigates disease at the molecular level. \nUpon completion of this course\, you will have: \n– Fluency in the essential terminology of the biopharma industry \n– An understanding of the science driving your company or client’s products \n– Improved ability to communicate with colleagues and stakeholders \n– Determination of where your organization “fits” in the healthcare landscape \n– Increased comprehension of innovative therapies within the biopharma industry \nSeating is limited\, so register early to reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Molecular Signatures of Pregnancy Health and Child Development: What Can Measures of Biological Age Tell Us?
DESCRIPTION:The Women’s Health Seminar Series features multidisciplinary research on women’s health. The goal of the series is to provide multidisciplinary training for attendees\, including students across a broad range of women’s health research topics. Speakers will present their research regarding the biological\, psychological\, behavioural\, economic and social factors in women’s health and their effects on women’s health outcomes. The series is open to everyone that is interested in learning more about women’s health. \nSpeaker: Dr. Kieran O’Donnell\, Assistant Professor\, Yale Child Study Center & Dept. Obs. Gyn. & Repro Sciences\, Yale School of Medicine \nDr. O’Donnell is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed within the Yale Child Study Center and the Department of Obstetrics\, Gynecology\, and Reproductive Sciences at the Yale School of Medicine. Dr O’Donnell leads the Health-Omics and Perinatal Epidemiology research group\, which seeks to better understand individual differences in the fetal origins of mental health. \nTalk summary: \nAn ever-increasing number of biomarkers of aging have been developed and used to better predict individual differences in age-related pathologies. Such DNA methylation-based measures of biological age have been proposed as ‘integrative biomarkers of system health’. Here\, drawing on unique data from multiple prospective\, longitudinal pregnancy cohorts\, and a perinatal intervention\, we ask: can measures of biological aging inform our understanding of pregnancy health and child development?

Sit back\, relax\, and watch as our competitors battle to achieve science communication fame and glory while learning something new in to kick off the fall season.\n\nWhat exactly is a science slam? Based on the format of a poetry slam\, a science slam is a competition where speakers gather to share their science with you – the audience. Competitors have five minutes to present on any science topic without the use of a slideshow and are judged based on communication skills\, audience impact and scientific content. Props and creative presentation styles are encouraged — no slides!\n\nWe are looking for Slammers!\nInterested in participating? Fill out our application form here: https://forms.gle/k23AayoUDNGjg95L8\n\nEnjoy improv? While the Slam scores are being tabulated\, members of our audience are welcome to come on stage and participate in a fun\, improv show very loosely inspired by science. \nDoors open at 7pm\, event begins at 7:30pm. \n\nSee you there!\n\nNotes:\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible. SUMMARY:Dr. Ami Citri: New Behavioral Analysis Tools Elucidate Neural Circuits for Spontaneous Actions
DESCRIPTION:I will describe unpublished work describing the development of a new deep-learning approach for comprehensive annotation of mouse behavior directly from raw video feeds. I will further describe the use of this approach for analysis of neural activity within basal ganglia circuits for control over action selection\, primarily in the context of spontaneous and compulsive actions in freely-behaving mice. Our results support a significant revision of the canonical model of the role of the basal ganglia in action selection.
