SUMMARY:Skills of Communication
DESCRIPTION:*This session is being offered in collaboration with MITACS Training. Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates\, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce. \nSkills of Communication is a full-day session featuring the tools and tips of better verbal communication. It will test your assumptions and mental models and for many it may be the first time you learn about the Ladder of Inference\, the Johari Window and more.  The goal is to make you more aware of the tools available to help you become a better communicator in both your work and personal lives. The mastery of these skills is a long-term process\, but by simply becoming more conscious of the various communication styles\, including your own\, you can approach conversations differently and change conversational direction to achieve better outcomes. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVE \nTo increase participant awareness and application of tools available to them to become better communicators in work and life. \nLEARNING OUTCOMES \nThrough participating and completing this workshop\, participants will: \n\nUnderstand how personal assumptions and mental models adversely influence communication\nLearn how to determine your own personal assumptions and how to avoid them\nLearn to navigate and approach difficult conversations\nIdentify and implement communications tools and techniques for team success\n\nKEY TOPIC AREAS \nThe purpose of communication \n\nCommunication not as simple as it appears\nWhen bad communication happens to good communicators\nIdentifying challenging conversations\nHow mental models & personal assumptions influence communication\n\nMental models and The Ladder of Inference\n3 Steps: Reflection\, Advocacy\, Inquiry\nCulture and communication\nGender and communication\nUnspoken words\nJohari Window Model\n\n\n\nPower of Rapport \n\nNon-verbal communication\nClosed-ended\, open-ended and probing questions\nListening challenges\nR.E.A.L Communication Model: Research\, Engage\, Ask Questions\, Listen\n\nTips on handling difficult conversations\nCommunicating like an expert: How to use different communication styles based on different audiences\n\n\n\nFACILITATORS \n\nGayle Hallgren-Rezac – is entrepreneur and a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Distinction award. Gayle is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and has spent over two decades observing and writing on networking around the world.\nJudy Thomson – is a chartered professional accountant who has held executive positions in human resources and administration with global companies in Canada and Asia.\n\nGayle and Judy have given hundreds of presentations to corporations\, associations\, governments\, and have worked extensively with university students from undergrads to MBAs and PhDs. They are co-authors of Work the Pond! Use the Power of Positive Networking to Leap Forward in Work and Life. \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION \nRegister here. \nGraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from UBC are eligible to participate. Priority will be given to VCHRI graduate students registered in the current academic session. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email. SUMMARY:Vancouver STEMminist Book Club reads "Superior" by Angela Saini
DESCRIPTION:In our eighth meeting of the Vancouver STEMminist book club\, we will be reading “Superior: The return of race science” by Angela Saini. We have our second guest host\, Khristine Carino (@KhristineCarino)\, who will be leading our discussion on this book!!  Angela’s book came out two years ago\, and is no less relevant now with the #BlackLiveMatter movement. It is our responsability as scientists and science ethusiasts to learn more about our implicit biases and recognize how race science is sneaking back into the narratives of research design. Come join our conversation and learn with us! \nWe will do a quick overview of the book at the beginning of the session followed by a deeper discussion. It is suggested to read the book\, but we welcome you to attend and contribute to the discussion either way. All voices and perspectives are welcomed. \nWe will meet again on Zoom since our last meeting went well using this platform. Future events will be in person or on Zoom depending on the availability of space and safety considerations. \n“Superior” is available in book (hardcover and softcover)\, and audiobook options. Hopefully\, copies will be available from the VPL pending their staged re-opening. Angela Saini has also done many interviews\, a BBC mini series\, on this book if you are looking for further reading. \nNext Book November 2020: Radium Girls\, by Kate Moore (A new movie was just released!) \nCheck out the LinkedIn Group\, and Mailing List below in the contact info!  \n  \nFAQs \nAbout the STEMminist Book Club Vancouver chapter: \nThe plan is to mirror the STEMminist Bookclub that was started in Australia by Dr.  Caroline Ford (@DrCFord). We will aim to read one book every two months followed by an in-person meeting here in Vancouver\, BC. You are also able to contribute to the discussion online on twitter @stemminist / #stemministbc (we don’t always read the same book as the online discussion). \nIf you are interested in the contributions of women to science\, learning more about the history of science\, and want to talk about some of the issues and stories brought up in the books this is the book club for you! \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nVancityStemminists@gmail.com \nMailing List Sign-up: http://eepurl.com/gSVrjz \nLinkedIn Group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13796841/

SUMMARY:BCREGMED Media Engagement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:News media set agendas\, shape policies and impact spending. Issues that are effectively profiled by the news media are seen as more important than those not receiving such attention. However\, often the people most expert in a particular field have difficulty translating their deep knowledge into commentary that is accessible and engaging to a lay audience made up of those who don’t have a science background or specialized vocabulary. BCREGMED is providing a two day media engagement workshop for its graduate students\, post docs\, and PIs. The goal being to provide support with concrete tools and strategies to increase their communications effectiveness when sharing information about any aspect of their work with the broader public through news media. \nWRITING COMPELLING COMMENTARY \nThis workshop provides participants with the confidence and tools to contribute their expertise to the public discourse through compelling\, short-form written commentary for newspaper op ed pages and online sites. It helps scholars to: \n• Identify elements of their work most likely to be of interest to a broader public and the news media;\n• Apply a 5-step approach to developing a persuasive\, focused written argument;\n• Learn some self-editing strategies and the process of submitting commentary to news media gatekeepers.
