SUMMARY:Vancouver STEMminist Book Club Reads "Radium Girls" by Kate Moore
DESCRIPTION:In our 9th meeting of the Vancouver STEMmist Book Club we will be meeting virtually to discuss all things Radium Girls.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\n### We will meet online using Zoom ### Link to be sent to registrants closer to the date. ### \nIn our 9th meeting of the Vancouver STEMminist book club\, we will be reading “Radium Girls: The dark story of America’s Shining Women” by Kate Moore. At the time\, the dangers of radiation were still unknown. This book cronicals the stories of women who painted the glowing molecule\, radium\, onto watch dials. Their mysterious illnesses lead to a notable battler for workers rights in the early 20th century. \nCome join our conversation and learn with us! \nWe will do a quick overview of the book at the beginning of the session followed by a deeper discussion. It is suggested to read the book\, but we welcome you to attend and contribute to the discussion either way. Not a scientist? Not a woman? No worries! All voices\, perspectives\, and listeners are welcomed. \nWe will meet again on Zoom since our last meetings went well using this platform. Future events will be in person or on Zoom depending on the availability of space and safety considerations. \n“Radium Girls” is available in book (hardcover and softcover)\, ebook\, and audiobook options. Copies are likely available at your local library. Vancouver Public Library has all version available to borrow. \nThe new Radium Girls movie will be available October 23rd to stream online between (no affiliation). \nNext Book January 2021: The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter\, also check out her CBC Gem TV Show free to all in Canada. \nAdditional Upcoming books: The Glass Universe\, by Dava Sobel (MArch 2021); Weapons of Math Destruction\, by Cathy O’Neil (May 2021) \nCheck out the LinkedIn Group\, and Mailing List below in the contact info!  \n  \n  \nFAQs \nAbout the STEMminist Book Club Vancouver chapter: \nThe plan is to mirror the STEMminist Bookclub that was started in Australia by Dr.  Caroline Ford (@DrCFord). We will aim to read one book every two months followed by an in-person meeting here in Vancouver\, BC. You are also able to contribute to the discussion online on twitter @stemminist / #stemministbc (we don’t always read the same book as the online discussion). \nIf you are interested in the contributions of women to science\, learning more about the history of science\, and want to talk about some of the issues and stories brought up in the books this is the book club for you! \nSponsorship: \n** SCWIST has made a comitment to sponosor upcoming Vancouver STEMminist Book Club events. Attend a SCWIST event and you may be a lucky recipient of one of our up-coming books. ** \nHow can I contact the organizer with any questions? \nVancityStemminists@gmail.com \nMailing List Sign-up: http://eepurl.com/gSVrjz \nLinkedIn Group: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13796841/

SUMMARY:2020 Michael Smith Distinguished Lecture with Dr. Sangeeta Bhatia
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by The Michael Smith Laboratories and the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology  \nDr. Sangeeta Bhatia is a John J. and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Engineering and the Director of the Laboratory for Multiscale Regenerative Technologies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). \nTalk Title: Tiny Technologies and Medicine\nOur laboratory studies how micro- and nanoscale systems can be deployed to understand\, diagnose\, and treat human disease.  In this talk\, I will describe our progress in two application areas:  liver disease and cancer. In the area of hepatic tissue engineering\, we are developing microtechnology tools to understand how ensembles of cells coordinate to produce tissues with emergent properties in the body. We have used this understanding to fabricate human microliver tissues in both 2D and 3D formats that enable us to study the pathogenesis drug-drug interactions\, hepatotropic pathogens\, and regeneration. \nIn the area of cancer\, we are developing nanotechnology tools to meet the challenge of delivering cargo into the tumor microenvironment where transport is dominated by diffusion.  Our strategy is to design nanotechnologies which emulate nature’s mechanisms of homing\, activation\, and amplification to deliver cytotoxic drugs\, diagnostic tools\, imaging agents\, and nucleic acids to tumors.  Thus\, using nature as a guide\, we are establishing a framework for building systems from micro- and nanoscale components that function collectively to treat human disease. \n  \nJoin by Zoom with this Meeting link:\nhttps://ubc.zoom.us/j/66440043435?pwd=SmNTRnpTajJjb1NsMWJVZWpWUFhrUT09
