SUMMARY:SFU Cafe Scientifique - Brain Mapping\, Brain Function and Evolution
DESCRIPTION:What brain mapping tells us about brain function and evolution \nYour brain is your most complex organ. It has evolved to sense and respond to the environment\, giving humans and other animals incredible abilities to interact with and move through the world. Given its complexity\, there is still a vast amount we do not know about it. A key approach to understanding the brain is finding where it controls different functions like recognizing faces or catching a ball. Join SFU Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology associate professor Dylan Cooke for a talk about how brain mapping gives scientists clues about how brains work and how they have evolved. \nApril 29\, 2025\n5:00 – 6:30 pm\nOn Zoom – Webinar link wil lbe e-mailed to all registered attendees \nQuestions about Café Scientifique? SUMMARY:SBME Research Seminar: The RNA Folding Problem Remains Open
DESCRIPTION:The discovery and design of biologically important RNA molecules has lagged behind proteins\, in part due to the general difficulty of three-dimensional RNA structural characterization. What are the prospects for an ‘AlphaFold moment’ for RNA? I’ll describe some recent progress in modeling RNA structure from old-fashioned and new machine learning\, cryoelectron microscopy\, and current and upcoming internet-scale competitions hosted on the Eterna\, Kaggle\, and CASP platforms. \nDr. Rhiju Das’s Biography:\nDr. Das is a Professor of Biochemistry at Stanford University School of Medicine. After training in particle physics and cosmology at Harvard\, Cambridge\, University College London\, and Stanford\, Dr. Das did postdoctoral research in computational protein folding at the University of Washington with David Baker. On returning to Stanford\, Dr. Das set up his lab to focus on computer modeling and design of RNA molecules\, which underlie important molecular machines in biology and medicine. As a core part of this research\, Dr. Das leads Eterna\, an open science platform that crowdsources intractable RNA design problems to 250\,000 players of an online videogame and provides scoring feedback based on actual wet-lab experiments. Dr. Das has been recognized by the Burroughs-Wellcome Career Award at the Interface of Science\, the Stanford Medicine Endowed Faculty Scholar award\, and selection as an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

SUMMARY:Dr. Pinar Ayata: Neurodegenerative Functions of Microglia in Alzheimer’s Disease
DESCRIPTION:The brain’s primary immune cells\, microglia\, are a leading causal cell type in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Yet\, the mechanisms by which microglia can drive neurodegeneration remain unresolved. Here\, we discover that a conserved stress signaling pathway\, the integrated stress response (ISR)\, characterizes a microglia subset with neurodegenerative outcomes. Autonomous activation of ISR in microglia is sufficient to induce early features of the ultrastructurally distinct “dark microglia” linked to pathological synapse loss. In AD models\, microglial ISR activation exacerbates neurodegenerative pathologies and synapse loss while its inhibition ameliorates them. Mechanistically\, we present evidence that ISR activation promotes the secretion of toxic lipids by microglia\, impairing neuron homeostasis and survival in vitro. Accordingly\, pharmacological inhibition of ISR or lipid synthesis mitigates synapse loss in AD models. Our results demonstrate that microglial ISR activation represents a neurodegenerative phenotype\, which may be sustained\, at least in part\, by the secretion of toxic lipids. \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Charan Ranganath: The Boundaries of Memory: How Cortico-Hippocampal Interactions at Event Boundaries Support Memory and Prediction.
DESCRIPTION:In neuroscience\, episodic memory is depicted as a process of activating “engrams” in the hippocampus that provide a static and faithful record of the past. In reality\, behavioral research has established that human memory is dynamic and constructive\, such that we do not replay the past\, but rather\, we rely on prior knowledge about events\, along with a small amount of retrieved information to imagine how the past could have been. Drawing from this work\, I propose a radical alternative to the dominant view in systems neuroscience: Rather than recording every moment of experience\, the brain might reconstruct past events from prior knowledge and a small amount of event-specific information encoded at moments of high uncertainty or prediction error called “event boundaries”. Our data are consistent with the view that the hippocampus and neocortex serve as complementary learning systems\, with the former playing a role in recording snapshots of cortical activity at event boundaries\, and the latter involved in using prior knowledge to understand and reconstruct past events. Beyond episodic memory\, this division of labor might be computationally optimal for spatial navigation\, prediction\, and decision-making. \n
