SUMMARY:How to be a Better Ally in Research and Study
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, participants will learn what it takes to build a respectful and inclusive communit by focusing on practices and policies that centre equity and diversity. Beginning with a discussion of the terms equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI)\, the group will explore how EDI matters in the work and research spaces at UBC. This is followed by an examination of bias and microaggressions\, how they manifest and what we can do about them.\n\n\nLed by Rachael Sullivan from the Equity and Inclusion office at UBC and taking place September 16th from 10am-12pm\, this session will draw from a variety of perspectives and utilize interactive learning to help build skills to bring into the research and workplace. \nAbout Rachael: \n\n\nRachael lives\, learns and works on the traditional\, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) People\, as a settler. Rachael joined the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO) in 2014 after completing her doctorate in the Department of Sociology (2005-2012). SUMMARY:Vancouver Nanomedicine Day
DESCRIPTION:It will take place on Thursday\, September 17\, 2020\, organized by The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the NanoMedicines Innovation Network (NMIN)\, a national Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE). \nDue to COVID-19\, this year’s symposium will be delivered for the first time as an online event. \nHowever\, this new format will not affect Vancouver Nanomedicine Day’s reputation for high quality speakers and leading-edge content. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKEYNOTE \nWe are proud to announce that this year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Robert Langer\, ScD\, from the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering – an icon among nanomedicine innovators. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will also have a very timely session on COVID-19 treatments using nanomedicine approaches\, with speakers from Canadian nanotechnology companies involved in developing COVID-19 therapeutics. \nIn addition\, novel science from the Canadian nanomedicine field will be highlighted. SUMMARY:Skills of Communication
DESCRIPTION:*This session is being offered in collaboration with MITACS Training. Mitacs Training provides professional development training to advanced degree graduates\, supplementing their education and research experience with the tools necessary to succeed in today’s workforce. \nSkills of Communication is a full-day session featuring the tools and tips of better verbal communication. It will test your assumptions and mental models and for many it may be the first time you learn about the Ladder of Inference\, the Johari Window and more.  The goal is to make you more aware of the tools available to help you become a better communicator in both your work and personal lives. The mastery of these skills is a long-term process\, but by simply becoming more conscious of the various communication styles\, including your own\, you can approach conversations differently and change conversational direction to achieve better outcomes. \nWORKSHOP OBJECTIVE \nTo increase participant awareness and application of tools available to them to become better communicators in work and life. \nLEARNING OUTCOMES \nThrough participating and completing this workshop\, participants will: \n\nUnderstand how personal assumptions and mental models adversely influence communication\nLearn how to determine your own personal assumptions and how to avoid them\nLearn to navigate and approach difficult conversations\nIdentify and implement communications tools and techniques for team success\n\nKEY TOPIC AREAS \nThe purpose of communication \n\nCommunication not as simple as it appears\nWhen bad communication happens to good communicators\nIdentifying challenging conversations\nHow mental models & personal assumptions influence communication\n\nMental models and The Ladder of Inference\n3 Steps: Reflection\, Advocacy\, Inquiry\nCulture and communication\nGender and communication\nUnspoken words\nJohari Window Model\n\n\n\nPower of Rapport \n\nNon-verbal communication\nClosed-ended\, open-ended and probing questions\nListening challenges\nR.E.A.L Communication Model: Research\, Engage\, Ask Questions\, Listen\n\nTips on handling difficult conversations\nCommunicating like an expert: How to use different communication styles based on different audiences\n\n\n\nFACILITATORS \n\nGayle Hallgren-Rezac – is entrepreneur and a recipient of the YWCA Woman of Distinction award. Gayle is a graduate of the University of British Columbia and has spent over two decades observing and writing on networking around the world.\nJudy Thomson – is a chartered professional accountant who has held executive positions in human resources and administration with global companies in Canada and Asia.\n\nGayle and Judy have given hundreds of presentations to corporations\, associations\, governments\, and have worked extensively with university students from undergrads to MBAs and PhDs. They are co-authors of Work the Pond! Use the Power of Positive Networking to Leap Forward in Work and Life. \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION \nRegister here. \nGraduate students and postdoctoral fellows from UBC are eligible to participate. Priority will be given to VCHRI graduate students registered in the current academic session. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email. Additional details will be confirmed via email the week prior to the event. \nNo-shows are costly for our program and\, most importantly\, leave students on the waiting list.
