SUMMARY:Art of the Slam
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the wonder of Science Slam! We are Vancouver’s most epic science showdown. Sit back\, relax\, and watch as our competitors battle to achieve science communication fame and glory while learning something new in our art-meets-science themed event. \nWhat exactly is a science slam? Based on the format of a poetry slam\, a science slam is a competition where speakers gather to share their science with you – the audience. Competitors have five minutes to present on any science topic without the use of a slideshow and are judged based on communication skills\, audience impact and scientific content. Props and creative presentation styles are encouraged — no slides! \nOur art-meets-science event will feature previous Slam champion Conan\, who creates YouTube videos exploring physics and psychology in popular films! \nDoors open at 7pm\, event begins at 7:30pm. \nEarly-bird tickets – ONLY $15! – are limited in quantity.\nRegular price tickets are $18. \nSee you there! \nNotes:\nThe venue is wheelchair accessible. The main cabaret room is accessible through a ramped entrance. We also have a wheelchair accessible washroom in the space as well. \nVenue is a 19+ venue with non-gendered bathrooms. \nMasks are not required but they are encouraged. \nScience Slam acknowledges that this event takes place on the traditional\, ancestral\, and unceded territory of the Squamish\, Musqueam\, and Tsleil Waututh Nation. Many of our attendees\, Science Slam included\, are guests of these territories and must act accordingly. \nScience Slam is an inclusive event\, as a result hate speech and abuse will not be tolerated.

SUMMARY:BioBasics 201: Targeted Biologics for the Non-Scientist
DESCRIPTION:LSBC\, in partnership with Biotech Primer\, is pleased to present BioBasics 201: Targeted Biologics for the Non-Scientist is an intensive\, two-day course focused on vaccines\, cell therapies\, gene therapies\, therapeutic antibodies\, and RNA-based drugs. Biopharma’s inspiration for the development of targeted biologics is our own human immune system\, so we begin with an in-depth explanation of immunology. The course then focuses on the science\, challenges\, and medical promise of next generation targeted biologics. BioBasics 201 is designed for the non-scientist who has taken BioBasics 101 or for those who understand the basics of DNA\, RNA\, proteins\, and cell signaling. Taught by industry experts who explain how these complex drugs work in a simple\, engaging manner. \nFive Takeaways: \n1. Understand the mechanisms used by the human body to protect itself against disease. \n2. Fluency in vaccine platforms\, how each protects against disease including Covid-19. \n3. Rational of therapeutic antibody mechanisms of action\, including monoclonal antibodies\, antibody-drug conjugates\, bispecific antibodies\, checkpoint inhibitors. \n4. Compare and contrast types of DNA- and RNA-based therapies and how each cures disease. \n5. Increased knowledge of cell therapies\, including all variations of CAR-based therapies \n  \nSeating is limited\, so register early to reserve your spot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAGENDA \nDay 1: \n8:30-9:00am | Continental Breakfast \n9:00-9:15am | Introductions \n9:15-10:15am | Immunology: Intro to the Human Immune System \n10:15-10:30am | Break \n10:30-11:45am | Immunology: How Our Body Fights Disease \n11:45-12:30pm | Lunch \n12:30-1:00pm | Immunotherapies: An Overview \n1:00-1:30pm | Targeted Biologics: Vaccines \n1:30-2:15pm | Focus On: Covid-19 \n2:15-2:30pm | Break \n2:30-3:45pm | Focus On: Oncology \n3:45-4:00pm | Wrap-Up \nDay 2: \n8:30-9:00am | Continental Breakfast \n9:00-10:00am | Targeted Biologics: Therapeutic Antibodies \n10:00-10:15am | Break \n10:15-11:15am | Targeted Biologics: Cell Therapies \n11:15-11:30am | Break \n11:30-12:15pm | Targeted Biologics: RNA-Based Therapies \n12:15-1:00pm | Lunch \n1:00-2:00pm | Targeted Biologics: Gene Therapy \n2:00-2:15pm | Break \n2:15-3:15pm | Targeted Biologics: Genome Editing \n3:15-3:30pm | Wrap-Up

SUMMARY:Research Seminar: Using the Past to Predict the Future
DESCRIPTION:Talk Summary:\nIn this talk participants will gain perspective on the history of medicine\, why augmented intelligence (AI) is key to the future of managing health\, the current state of perioperative AI models\, and the changes necessary to make the future a reality. \n\nDr. Ira Hofer | Department of Anethesiology and Medicine; Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai \nDr. Ira Hofer Biography:\nIra S. Hofer\, MD is a practicing anesthesiologist and clinical informaticist at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Hofer has been working in the field of big data analytics and electronic health record (EHR) data for over 15 years. He has had a variety of roles at multiple hospital systems building and deploying AI models and overseeing analytics for system wide and departmental programs. He currently holds joint appointments in Anesthesiology\, Medicine and the Charles Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine and is the inaugural director of the Rapid Randomized Trial Unit in the CBIM which is focused on deploying AI models into clinical care using study designs to measure efficacy. \nDr. Hofer’s research interests involve leveraging the data from the EHR to understand\, quantify and ultimately mitigate risk in the perioperative period. His work includes some of the first papers to apply machine learning techniques for perioperative outcome prediction and has been featured on the cover of both Anesthesiology and Anesthesia&Analgesia. Ira has a K01 from the National Heart Lung and Blood institute\, and funding from the NIA funded IMPACT Collaboratory for a pragmatic trial to reduce postoperative delirium using an AI driven decision support model. He also serves as an associate editor for Anesthesia & Analgesia. His current research focus is on creating featurization techniques to incorporate a wide range of EHR data into machine learning models in order to improve discrimination and calibration as well as establishing multi-center perioperative collaboratives to better share raw and processed EHR data. \nIn addition to his academic accomplishments\, Dr. Hofer is the Founder and President of Extrico Health based on technology he developed. The Extrico Software Platform has been successfully deployed at major hospitals around the nation and helps providers turn the raw data from their electronic health record into actionable insights to improve patient care\, increase operational efficiencies and optimize the revenue cycle. \nLocation:\nLife Sciences Centre\nLSC 1003 (LT3)
