This 2-day workshop is designed to be an active learning event for innovative\, creative researchers and potential business founders that will introduce and develop the core knowledge required to move a discovery from bench to the market. \nGuided by the three key aspects: Product – Market – Finance participants will examine some of the many questions and hurdles they will have to deal with to achieve successful commercialization of an idea\, whether through licensing or through their own start-up company. \nFirst\, participants will be asked to prepare and present an elevator pitch of their idea. Working in teams of three\, the best pitches will be fleshed out into business plan. Presentations and discussions will focus on the three main themes\, with time provided to work the gained knowledge into a final business plan. Participants should come to this course with an idea or invention you wish to commercialize. \nLearning objectives: \n\nDuring this course participants will gain an understanding of how to prepare and present an elevator pitch to potential business partners\nHaving heard the presentations and discussions in this course\, participants will be able to address the three main themes in a solid business case\nUpon completion of this commercialization training\, participants will be better informed regarding the benefits of starting a company – and whether a startup is the best choice to commercialize your idea\nThrough presentations and discussions participants will gain an understanding of the complex interplay of product\, market and finance in the context of commercializing an invention\n\nPre-learning tasks and prerequisites: \n\nHave an invention or idea that you think needs to be shared with stem cell researcher in Canada and the rest of the world\nPrepare a 2-minute elevator pitch intended to convince an investor to take a half-hour meeting with you (guidance for preparing elevator pitches will be prepared).\n\nPreliminary Schedule (subject to change): \n Day 1  \n\n\n\n8:15 – 9:00 am\nBreakfast\n\n\n9:00 – 9:30 am\nIntroductions (all)\n\n\n9:30 – 10:30 am\nPresentation of elevator pitches; group designations (teams of 2-3)\n\n\n10:30 – 11:00 am\nCritiques and questions\n\n\n11:00 – 11:30 am\nCoffee break\n\n\n11:30 am – 12:00 pm\nIntroduction of business plan subject (selected based on elevator pitches)\n\n\n12:00 – 12:45 pm\nLecture: market concepts\n\n\n12:45 – 13:45 pm\nBox lunch\n\n\n13:45 – 15:00 pm\nGroup work on market concepts\n\n\n15:00 – 15:45 pm\nLecture: product design and manufacturing\n\n\n15:45 – 16:00 pm\nCoffee break\n\n\n16:00 – 17:00 pm\nGroup work on product design and manufacturing aspects\n\n\n\n  \nDay 2 \n\n\n\n8:15 – 9:00 am\nBreakfast\n\n\n9:00 – 9:15 am\nOpen forum\n\n\n9:15 – 10:00 am\nLecture: Finance\n\n\n10:00 – 10:30 am\nIntroduction to a business plan\n\n\n10:30 – 10:45 am\nCoffee break\n\n\n10:45 am – 12:30 pm\nGroup work creating a business plan outline\n\n\n12:30 – 14:00 pm\nLunch\n\n\n14:00 – 16:00 pm\nPresentation of business plans and discussion\n\n\n16:00 – 16:30 pm\nDiscussion\, questions and wrap up\n\n\n\n  \nDetails of the SCN Award and Application Procedure:\nThis SCN award provides financial assistance for eligible trainees to attend the Commercialization: Building a Business Case workshop\, March 13-14\, 2020\, organized by the Stem Cell Network\, STEMCELL Technologies and BCRegMed. \nTravel Support Award Conditions: \n\nThe SCN award will cover travel expenses associated with attending the course\, for trainees not based in Vancouver:\n\ntravel to/from the course location\nup to three nights accommodation at our designated hotel and meals not provided during the course.\n\n\nSuccessful applicants will be automatically registered for the course by the Stem Cell Network upon confirmation of their acceptance of the award.\nReimbursement will be processed following the course\, in accordance with the SCN Travel Booking & Reimbursement Policy (policy will be provided to the selected applicants).\nAccommodation during the course will be provided for trainees not based in Vancouver. SUMMARY:Language Science Talk: Dr. Edward Chang\, Toward a Speech Neuroprosthetic
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Speaking is a unique and defining human behavior.  Over the past decade\, we have focused on deciphering the basic neural code that underlies our ability to speak fluently. \nDuring speech production\, vocal tract movement gestures for all speech sounds are encoded by highly specialized neural activity\, organized as a map\, in the human speech motor cortex.   A major effort is now underway to translate these findings towards building an articulatory-based speech neuroprosthetic device for people who cannot communicate. \nDr. Edward Chang\, Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of California\, San Francisco\, will present this Language Science Talks event as part of the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health Research Neuroscience Research Colloquium series. \nRSVP here \nEveryone is welcome to attend this event\, co-hosted by the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health Research and the UBC Language Sciences Initiative. \nWe ask that attendees refrain from wearing perfumes and scented soaps to prevent causing allergic reactions for other attendees. Click here for a map and directions to the venue via Google.

SUMMARY:UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference 2020
DESCRIPTION:The UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference will centre on the role of women and gender-oppressed communities in STEM fields in the past\, present\, and future.\nThese communities have historically been underrepresented and disadvantaged in STEM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics). \nThe goal of this conference is to increase awareness and deepen understanding of the complexities of the gender gap in STEM\, facilitate discussion around common experiences of gender-oppressed communities\, and equip attendees with the inspiration and motivation to tackle the STEM gender gap in their own spheres. \nTopics will include the stigma and bias women and gender-oppressed communities face when pursuing careers and education in STEM\, how gender-oppressed communities have made a positive impact on the world through STEM\, how the gender gap in STEM can best be addressed through policy and innovation\, and the societal\, health and economic impacts of addressing this gap. \nEveryone is welcome to attend and more information about our speakers as well as a detailed schedule will soon be available on our website. \nThe conference will be held in Room 182 of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC (1961 East Mall\, Vancouver). \nThe UBC Gender Equity & STEM Conference 2020 is hosted by the UBC Young Women for STEM club in partnership with the UBC Department of Physics and Astronomy.
