SUMMARY:TI Methods Speaker Series: What’s Counted and What Counts: Metrics in Scholarly Publishing
DESCRIPTION:The TI Methods Speaker Series are offered free of charge and everyone is welcome. The event is held at noon on the last Wednesday of each month and used to take place in Rudy North Lecture Theatre (CBH 101) in the Centre for Brain Health\, UBC Point Grey Campus. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, while physical distancing measures are in effect\, the TI Methods Speaker Series are offered via videoconference. The presentations are recorded and the video recordings are posted online.  \n\nWHEN: Wednesday\, May 26th\, 2021 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM PDT [click here to convert to your local time]\nWHERE: Offered online using Zoom. You must register in order to receive the Zoom connection details. \nTITLE: What’s counted and what counts: Metrics in scholarly publishing \nSPEAKER: Dr. Michele Avissar-Whiting\, Editor in Chief of the Research Square platform. \n\nAbout the topic: In this presentation\, Dr. Michele Avissar-Whiting will discuss the ways in which journals\, authors\, and individual articles are metricized. Love them or hate them\, metrics have been used to convey impact\, interest\, and status in academic publishing for decades\, and the number and variety of different types of metrics continues to grow every few years. But how are these metrics derived and are they ever a good proxy for quality? This talk discusses the advantages and limitations of “classic” journal-level metrics like the impact factor as well as novel approaches to understanding quality at the article level. \nAbout the speaker: Dr. Michele Avissar-Whiting is the Editor in Chief of the Research Square platform. She holds a BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Rhode Island and a PhD in Medical Science from Brown University. Dr. Avissar-Whiting’s thesis work was focused on microRNA profiles of head and neck cancer. After a 2 year postdoc at Brown studying epigenetic effects of in-utero arsenic exposure\, she took a position as a Managing Editor at Research Square. She has served as an Operations Manager for the company’s Figure Formatting services as well as its Promotional services\, and was later appointed as director of operations for the company’s R&D arm\, which included the new preprint platform. \nAbout the TI Methods Speaker Series: The TI Methods Speaker Series are offered free of charge and everyone is welcome. During the COVID-19 pandemic\, while physical distancing measures are in effect\, the TI Methods Speaker Series are offered via videoconference. We reviewed the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) to identify cases suspicious for de novo ITP (last access March 19\, 2021) and gathered data across several centers regarding adult patients with ITP who received a SARS-CoV2 vaccine. Our (yet unpublished) findings support that the majority of patients with ITP did well after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination.
