SUMMARY:Novel Methods for Equitable People-Centred Health Measurement
DESCRIPTION:The Centre of Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS) is presenting a hybrid Work in Progress Seminar on April 5 featuring our Program Head of Patient-Reported outcomes Dr. Rick Sawatzky and Associate Director Dr. Amy Salmon to share their work looking at how to account for social determinants of health in patient-reported outcomes. \nIt is widely recognized that social inequities are associated with health outcomes. There has been significant progress made in measuring patients’ perspectives of their health (including symptoms\, mobility\, mental health\, and other aspects of their wellbeing). These patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are intended to understand the patient’s experience independent of conventional clinical assessments. Yet\, current methods of measuring PROs do not take social determinants of health (SDOH) into account. People from diverse genders\, cultures\, traditions\, and life experiences may understand and interpret some questions about their health differently. Ignoring such individual differences in how people respond to questions could lead to measurement biases that reinforce inequities by concealing or misrepresenting how they view their health. In view of this systemic injustice\, our team is developing and evaluating a new methodology for equitable people-centred health measurement (EPHM). We intend to tailor PRO measurements by directly integrating information about patients’ SDOH. In this presentation\, you will learn about: (a) this novel measurement methodology\, (b) the findings of our research that led to the development of this methodology\, and (c) the EPHM measurement project currently in progress.

The first Michael Smith Distinguished Lecture was held in 2005. Since then\, many prestigious researchers have been invited to UBC to share their research with eager students\, faculty\, and staff. \nSpeaker: Dr. Karen Miga\nAssistant Professor – Biomolecular Engineering\, University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC)\nProject Director – Human Pangenome Reference Consortium (HPRC) Production Centre at UCSC\nCo-Founder – Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) consortium\nAssociate Director – UCSC Genomics Institute \nDr. Miga’s research program combines innovative computational and experimental approaches to produce the high-resolution sequence maps of human centromeric and pericentromeric DNAs. The Miga lab aims to uncover a new source of genetic and epigenetic variation in the human population\, which is useful to investigate novel associations between genotype and phenotype of inherited traits and disease. \nTalk Title: Expanding studies of global genomic diversity with complete\, telomere-to-telomere (T2T) assemblies \nAbstract: The human reference genome is the most widely used resource in human genetics and is due for a major update. Its current structure is a linear composite of merged haplotypes from more than 20 people\, with a single individual comprising most of the sequence. It contains biases and errors within a framework that does not represent global human genomic variation. A high-quality reference with global representation of common variants\, including single-nucleotide variants\, structural variants and functional elements\, is needed. The Human Pangenome Reference Consortium aims to create a more sophisticated and complete human reference genome with a graph-based\, telomere-to-telomere representation of global genomic diversity. Here we leverage innovations in technology\, study design and global partnerships with the goal of constructing the highest-possible quality human pangenome reference. Our goal is to improve data representation and streamline analyses to enable routine assembly of complete diploid genomes. With attention to ethical frameworks\, the human pangenome reference will contain a more accurate and diverse representation of global genomic variation\, improve gene–disease association studies across populations\, expand the scope of genomics research to the most repetitive and polymorphic regions of the genome\, and serve as the ultimate genetic resource for future biomedical research and precision medicine. \nThis seminar will be presented in a hybrid format. Australia Genomics has established a national collaboration supporting the translation of genomic research into clinical practice. And Genomics England’s initiative to sequence 100\,000 genomes of patients affected by rare diseases or cancer is providing groundbreaking insights and continued findings into the role genomics can play in health care. Though efforts such as these have yet to materialize in Canada\, can we leverage already existing biobanks and health data administration systems to make gains and fulfil the promise of precision health for Canadians? \nLet us learn how we can individually and collectively contribute to filling this gap while ensuring that research and health care advances are equitable to all.

SUMMARY:Science Rendezvous with SFU Science
DESCRIPTION:This is your chance to connect with our university scientists and researchers\, experience the magic of their scientific discoveries\, and CREATE your own breakthrough inventions that you can call your own! \nScience Rendezvous and International Astronomy Day celebrates science through a combination of science demonstrations and activities that revolve around food\, climate\, reconciliation and home.  A few examples of topics and discussions would include: \n\nchemical reactions in the kitchen and how food ingredients can create all sorts of mixtures\, solutions and chemical changes\nearth science presentations on natural disasters and their effects on climate changes and the environment\nIndigenous culture presented in general astronomy through Indigenous names of stars and constellations and the ancestral stories behind these stars\n\n\nFoodwebs and foodchains in local habitats such as kelp forests and other nearby environments that communities can help protect and sustain\n\nCome to SFU Burnaby and CREATE with us!
