During his time at UBC he has made numerous break-throughs in the field of cationic host defence (antimicrobial) peptides and finding alternate treatments to antibiotic resistance. \nHancock is “considered a world leader in his field” and over his career he has published more than 720 papers and reviews\, has 65 patents awarded\, and is an ISI highly cited author in Microbiology with more than 72\,000 citations and an h-index of 153. He has won several awards and is an Officer of the Order of Canada. He is a co-founder of Migenix\, Inimex Pharmaceuticals\, ABT Innovations\, Sepset Biotherapeutics\, and the Centre for Drug Research and Development. \nCurrently Hancock and his lab’s research interests include small cationic peptides as novel antimicrobials\, broad-spectrum anti-biofilm agents\, and modulators of innate immunity\, the development of novel treatments for antibiotic resistant infections and inflammation\, the systems biology of innate immunity\, inflammatory diseases and Pseudomonas aeruginosa\, and antibiotic uptake and resistance.

SUMMARY:Pint of Science Festival
DESCRIPTION:Pint of Science Canada invites scientists to your favourite local bars to discuss their latest research and discoveries over a drink or two. This is the perfect opportunity to meet scientists and ask questions. You have no excuse not to come and share a drink with us!\nPint of Science is a non-profit organisation that brings some of the most brilliant scientists to your local pub to discuss their latest research and findings with you. You don’t need any prior knowledge\, and this is your chance to meet the people responsible for the future of science (and have a pint with them). Our festival runs over a few days in May every year\, but we occasionally run events during other months. \nIn 2012 Dr Michael Motskin and Dr Praveen Paul were two research scientists at Imperial College London in the UK. They started and organised an event called ‘Meet the Researchers’. It brought people affected by Parkinson’s\, Alzheimer’s\, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis into their labs to show them the kind of research they do. It was inspirational for both visitors and researchers. They thought if people want to come into labs to meet scientists\, why not bring the scientists out to the people? And so Pint of Science was born. In May 2013 they held the first Pint of Science festival in just three UK cities. It quickly took off around the world and is now in nearly 300 cities. Read more here. Pint of Science Canada held its first events in 2016\, a full list of locations can be found here. \nOur events fall into the following topics: \n\nBeautiful Mind – neuroscience\, psychology and psychiatry\nAtoms to Galaxies – physics\, chemistry\, maths\, astronomy\nOur Body – medicine\, human biology\, health\nPlanet Earth – geosciences\, plant sciences\, zoology\nTech Me Out – biotechnology\, robotics\, computers\nOur Society – law\, history\, politics\, policy\, languages\nCreative Reactions – art and science come together\n\nCreative reaction’s date will be available soon \n…and keep an eye out for some ‘special’ events.

SUMMARY:2019 Microscopical Society of Canada Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The 2019 Microscopical Society of Canada (MSC) Annual meeting is a national imaging conference that will be held at the Life Sciences Centre between May 22nd to May 24th. This conference will cover broad topics in light and electron imaging technologies. An important training aspect of this conference is to allow graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, and undergraduate students to gain exposure to new light and electron microscopy technologies and to present their work. In addition to poster session\, trainees will be given opportunities to present short talks in each of the six scientific symposia. Trainee awards for best talks and posters will be selected by keynote speakers and principal investigators. \n  \nFor the 2019 MSC Annual Meeting\, we have invited an exciting list of keynote speakers including: \nRobert Glaeser – Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (http://biosciences.lbl.gov/profiles/robert-m-glaeser/) \n-one of the founding fathers of the cryo-EM field \nJoshua Vaughan – University of Washington (http://depts.washington.edu/chem/people/faculty/vaughan.html) \n-tools development for high resolution fluorescence microscopy \nRobert Campbell – University of Alberta \n(http://campbellweb.chem.ualberta.ca) \n-tools development for live cell and tissue imaging \nJohn Rubinstein – University of Toronto (http://www.sickkids.ca/AboutSickKids/Directory/People/R/John-Rubinstein.html) \n-internationally renowned expert in cryo-EM structural analysis of membrane proteins and protein complexes \nYasushi Okada – RIKEN (http://www.qbic.riken.jp/english/research/outline/lab-07.html) \n-developer of super resolution microscopy imaging hardware and approaches \nTamir Gonen – UCLA (http://www.biolchem.ucla.edu/people/faculty/tamir-gonen) \n-developer of MicroED approach for rapid structural determination of small molecules and proteins \n  \nAbstract submission deadline will be March 30th\, 2019\, Early bird registration deadline will be April 15th\, 2019. By securing sponsorships from academic units as well as different vendors\, we have managed to keep the registration relatively low (starting at $250 for students/postdocs).
