In this 60-minute show\, he blends volcanology\, entomology\, Hawaiian history\, and everyday quirks (like cats and cookies) into sharp\, clever comedy that’s equal parts hilarious and educational. \nWhether you’re a scientist\, a teacher\, a student\, or just here for some jokes\, you’ll never look at a volcano the same way again. Audiences have called VOLCANO “nerdy and vivid\,” “hilarious and clever\,” and “the best volcanology jokes you’ll ever hear.” \nAbout Ben \nBen Miller is a NYC-based scientist turned comedian. Over the past 8 years\, he has performed at top clubs such as Broadway Comedy Club\, Carolines\, and The Stand. Ben was once ranked as the top roast battler in NYC. He has a degree in Materials Science and Engineering\, has worked on a science bus\, 3D printed cookies\, and even diffused a few bar fights while on stage. SUMMARY:19th Annual Earl W. Davie Symposium
DESCRIPTION:This annual 1-day symposium honours Dr. Earl W. Davie’s scientific contributions in hemostasis-thrombosis\, which have impacted on the care of patients world-wide. He and his colleagues devised the revolutionary Waterfall Sequence for Blood Clotting\, and subsequently\,  throughout the 1960s and ’70s\, applied cutting edge technologies to identify and characterize most of the coagulation proteins and their genes. For his many remarkable achievements\, Dr. Davie\,  a Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Washington in Seattle\, was widely acclaimed\, receiving numerous awards\, including investiture as a member of the US National Academy of Science. He was a wonderful teacher and mentor\, and he left a legacy that will be felt for many generations.\n\nRegister today!

Don’t miss out—bring your curiosity and join the nerdy fun! \nThis month we’re donating to Hogan’s Alley Society. add to your ticket to increase this month’s donation! \nTaryn Scarff – Killer Whales \nIn recent years\, killer whales have been seen around Vancouver more and more\, but these visits may not be as random as they seem. Transient killer whales are marine mammal eaters and travel along the west coast of North America from Alaska to California. They frequently visit BC waters\, but their visits aren’t random\, they’re closely tied to what’s available to eat. This talk will dive into how the seasonal abundance of their prey like seals and sea lions\, and even non-prey items like salmon\, influences when and where the killer whales show up. Using years of sightings data\, Taryn will share what these patterns tell us about the marine ecosystems of the Salish Sea and what this means for the future success of the transient killer whale population. \nBio:\nTaryn Scarff has a Master of Science in Zoology from UBC where her research focused on the seasonal presence of killer whales and their prey in BC. She also has a BSc in Applied Biology from UBC and now works in the world of fisheries for a non-profit organization. Every summer she volunteers with the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre\, rehabilitating harbour seal pups\, sea otters and other adorable marine mammals. In her free time\, Taryn loves reading\, eating good food with friends\, and watching any Real Housewives series. \nArmin Mortazavi – Leaving Religion \nNerd Nite cartoonist takes the stage once again to nerd out about his religious deconstruction\, going from a strong faith\, to his struggles believing in God and his internal conflicts with organized religion. \nBio: Armin is a cartoonist and an indie game developer. He currently works in education\, making learning materials for adults. Armin likes dogs\, Memphis blues barbecue\, and playing Skyrim on Friday nights. \nKwasi Wrensford – Animals & Climate Change \nUs humans have been drastically modifying our environment\, whether it be through building and modifying the land around us\, moving species across oceans\, or changing the world’s very climate. All those human-caused changes force animals to either adapt and survive their new normal\, or pack up and seek out more optimal habitats. Who stays and who goes\, however\, remains an open question for scientists. Join Dr. Kwasi Wrensford as he takes you on a tour of his travels and studies across North America and what he has learned about how animals are coping with a warming\, developed\, and rapidly changing world. Kwasi’s work will range from the individual decisions animals make to survive rapidly changing environments\, to the implications and patterns for populations at continental scales. \nBio: Dr. Kwasi Wrensford (he/him/his) is a postdoctoral Fellow in the Biodiversity Research Centre and Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on how various animal species’ habitats and ranges are shifting under human-caused environmental change . To do so\, he integrates individual animal behavior\, wildlife ecology\, and global change biology to better understand and coexist with animals in BC and beyond. One such event occurred in Vancouver’s Stanley Park\, where there were an unprecedented 45 coyote attacks on humans in under nine months between December 2020 and August 2021. Following these attacks\, speculation regarding possible causes was commonly in the news\, but it wasn’t until recently that a scientific study was done to identify the who\, what\, when\, where\, and why of it all. Join Nathan Lewis\, as he breaks down the “investigation” to uncover the mystery of the Stanley Park coyote attacks. \nBio: Nathan Lewis is a PhD candidate in the Department of Zoology at UBC studying human-wildlife coexistence\, with a focus on urban coyotes. He is broadly interested in how coyotes adapt their behaviours to thrive in areas with high human-use and how that may contribute to conflicts with humans. Among other projects\, he recently led a study focused on understanding what spatial\, temporal\, and human factors explained which human-coyote encounters in Stanley Park were aggressive rather than non-conflictual sightings. In his free time\, Nathan enjoys wildlife photography (check out @fieldnotesbynathan on Instagram)\, camping\, and playing wingspan. \nWine – Janet Helou \nWine is a surprisingly complex liquid for as many millennia as it’s been around\, but why is it still such a mystery to so many people? (Aside from that one friend who is dying to explain malolactic fermentation to you – spoiler: your speaker is that friend). \nJoin food scientist & sommelier Janet Helou as she strips away the vineyard romance to reveal the even sexier volatile chemistry in your glass – this talk will cover how wine can be made in infinitely different styles and the flavour chemistry behind it all\, the natural and non-alc wine movements\, and the science of hangovers. We’ll round things out with an industry insider’s “cheat sheet” on how to navigate confusing labeling laws and marketing fluff to find high-quality bottles without overpaying for great wines. \nCome for the chemistry\, stay for the hangover cures\, and leave with the scientific confidence to order the best bottle on the list. \nBio: Janet Helou is a Certified Food Scientist and WSET level 3 Sommelier\, with an Honours BSc from the University of Toronto. In her free time she enjoys racing her sailboat\, Mischief\, year-round in Vancouver which should tell you pretty much all you need to know about her character and otherwise questionable decision-making. \nTherapeutic Chatbots – Zoha Khawaja \nThe rapid digitalization of care has increased acceptance of AI technologies designed to reduce healthcare barriers and enhance access. One emerging tool is the use of AI chatbots that analyze vocal biomarkers (voice AI) to diagnose and monitor mental health conditions. With the current lack of mental health resources available and accessible\, these technologies have shown promising success for performing clinical tasks such as disease detection and management. However\, their future development and use are far from straightforward. The absence of standardized protocols for voice data collection\, coupled with a lack of regulations that recognize voice as a valid biomarker\, raises significant ethical\, legal\, and social concerns. This dramatized talk will transport audience members into a not-so-distant future where voice AI technologies have become fully integrated into clinical practice. Through this speculative scenario\, the presentation will not only highlight the current challenges faced when utilizing AI chatbots for therapeutic care but also underscore the conditions that must be met in order for voice AI tools to be considered safe and trustworthy medical devices. \nBio: Zoha Khawaja recently graduated from SFU’s Master of Science in Health Sciences program and holds a BA in Psychology from the University of Calgary. As a member of the Bridge2AI Voice Consortium\, her thesis engaged both her expertise in bioethics and psychology by exploring the ethical\, legal\, and social implications of using voice AI chatbots for therapeutic care. She continues to work in the Voice Consortium’s lab and is excited to begin her Mitacs internship with a tech startup this winter\, focusing on applying insights from her research into real-world clinical practice. DESCRIPTION:The Northern Lights have always carried stories—frightening\, spiritual\, epic\, and playful. \nKiuryaq is a circumpolar performance exploring our relationship with the Northern Lights—“kiuryaq” in Inuvialuktun—created through collaboration among Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists from Canada\, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland)\, and Sápmi (Norway). \nAt its centre are two siblings born in the North: one raised beneath the Aurora with their grandparents\, the other adopted south and unaware of their origins. Through ancestral connection\, choices are made that alter both their worlds. \nBlending theatre\, live music\, and video design\, Kiuryaq weaves northern stories into a landscape of light\, memory\, and cosmology. A performance of transformation and return\, Kiuryaq is an invitation into the wisdom\, warnings\, and humour of the circumpolar region. \nThis one-night-only performance is preceded by an artist talk with co-creators Reneltta Arluk and Rawdna Carita Eira\, and a reception hosted by the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Come early for complimentary refreshments and a conversation about the artistic practice and cultural worldviews informing this landmark circumpolar collaboration.

Join us as we explore the diversity of fishes and take a closer look at fish in our collection. \nThe collection holds over 800\,000 specimens and over 50\,000 DNA and tissue samples\, making it the third-largest fish collection in Canada. The collection holds 11 holotype specimens\, original specimens that were used to describe new species. It also contains representatives of what may be the youngest fish species on Earth: pairs of stickleback species that evolved only recently in British Columbia’s lakes. \n\nRegistration\nNature Club is free for UBC Families and Members. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Rashid Sumaila is a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at UBC’s Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. His research examines how economics can be used to protect marine ecosystems\, with a focus on fisheries subsidies\, marine protected areas\, illegal fishing\, climate change\, marine plastic pollution\, and oil spills. Through this work\, Dr. Sumaila bridges science\, economics\, and policy to address some of the most urgent environmental challenges facing our oceans. \nInternationally recognized for his impact\, Dr. Sumaila regularly advises global institutions including the United Nations and the World Trade Organization. This upcoming meeting marks a very special milestone: for the first time in the past 28 years\, CSE Echo Weekend will be held in beautiful Vancouver!
