SUMMARY:Success Stories in Science: Life after Graduation | Dialogue with Lorena Braid
DESCRIPTION:Curious about what you could do after graduating with a Science Degree? Join your peers in this event\, as Lorena Braid\, CSO of Aurora BioSolutions and our very own Assistant Professor in MBB\, guides us through the journey that led her to founding her own mesenchymal stem cell research company! \n\n\n\nSci-Space is proud to present this Dialogue Series\, engaging with industry entrepreneurs and interdisciplinary leaders. Don’t have a clue of the types of jobs or companies out there after you complete your BSc and beyond? We’re incredibly happy to host Lorena Braid from Aurora BioSolutions. She will be speaking on “Career cartography: An ongoing journey through an uncharted landscape of opportunities”. There will be a Q&A period following the talk. \nDon’t forget to come prepared with a question or 2! \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Braid was awarded a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University in 2011\, where she studied the complex signalling mechanisms that drive cell fate specification and patterning in the developing fruitfly. She then completed a postdoctoral NSERC Visiting Fellowship at Defence Research and Development Canada\, where she explored the usefulness of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) for military medicine and launched her current research programs. In 2014\, Dr. Braid founded Aurora BioSolutions Inc. where she serves as CSO and leads a research team to develop MSC-based treatments for combat and mass casualty critical care. Dr. Braid recently joined the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and the Centre for Cell Biology\, Development and Disease (C2D2) at Simon Fraser University as an Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in MSC Biology. Here\, her research team studies the role of endogenous MSCs in physiology\, pathogenesis and aging with a goal of developing next-generation therapeutics that target MSCs in situ.
