SUMMARY:Medical Device Regulations and Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an informative workshop on Health Canada regulations and guidelines for clinical research on medical devices. Clinical researchers and staff must be familiar with the requirements to apply to obtain an Investigational Testing Authorization (ITA) and with their roles and responsibilities related to this authorization. This workshop will provide an overview of the application requirements and will outline how research staff can ensure that best practices are implemented into clinical studies. \nThis workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills\, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research. \nLearning objectives\nIn this workshop you will learn: \n\nA brief overview of the regulations and guidelines related to the study of medical devices in clinical research\nWhen and how to apply for an ITA and communicate revisions and amendments to Health Canada\nRoles and responsibilities related to an ITA

SUMMARY:Health Innovation Series
DESCRIPTION:Building the Future of Research and Care on the New Medical Campus\nJoin us to learn how Providence is building a future that will improve the quality of life for people in BC and beyond. \nIn addition to featuring three of Canada’s leading researchers and physicians\, this event is an exclusive opportunity to hear from President and CEO of Providence Health Care\, Fiona Dalton. She will be sharing insights into the impact of the fully integrated Jim Pattison Medical Campus\, and highlighting how this hub of knowledge\, discovery\, and collaboration is poised to solve pressing medical challenges and stimulate innovation and economic growth in BC. \n  \nFeatured Presentations\n\n\n\n\nThe Future of Digestive Health \nDr. Greg Rosenfeld The Digestive Health Centre is a first-of-its-kind multidisciplinary and holistic space that offers world-class care through a one-stop shop patient experience\, informed by empowering research and supported by leading-edge innovations. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Greg Rosenfeld was a family physician before specializing in Internal Medicine\, Gastroenterology and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). He completed sub-specialty training in IBD with a master’s degree in Clinical Epidemiology. He is co-founder of the IBD Centre of BC\, a charity established to provide clinical care\, research\, and education of patients with IBD and their families. He is the chair of the Digestive Health Centre of BC. His current research interests are in diagnostic techniques and monitoring of patients with IBD as well as clinical epidemiology of IBD. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTurning the Tides on a Global Scourge \nDr. Jim Russell Sepsis is the #1 cause of death worldwide\, but is a poorly recognized condition. Our researchers will discuss the innovative work and discoveries they have made to ultimately improve patients’ lives and reduce mortality. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Jim Russell is a professor of Medicine at University of British Columbia (UBC) and a principal investigator at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation (HLI) at St. Paul’s Hospital. In 1982\, he founded the Critical Care Medicine (CCM) division at UBC and St. Paul’s\, which he has grown to be ranked the #1 septic shock research group in the world. Dr. Russell’s research and publications have led to direct impact on care of critically ill septic patients. Over a dozen breakthroughs from his work have now been incorporated into standard guidelines of care. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTransforming Care for Complex Skin Conditions \nDr. Noelle Wong As the leading hub for research and medical training\, the Dermatology Centre is committed to delivering innovative and specialized medical dermatologic care through seamless access to nine subspecialty clinics that is rarely available in BC. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Dr. Noelle Wong is a duo board-certified dermatologist and fellowship trained dermatologic and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon in both Canada and the United States. She is the Division Head of Dermatology at St. Paul’s Hospital\, where she started a surgical dermatology clinic to expedite access to skin cancer excision surgery and to serve as a teaching clinic for dermatology residents. Dr. Wong is also a clinical instructor with University of British Columbia’s Department of Dermatology and Skin Science. Her passion lies in surgical and procedural dermatology as well as advanced facial reconstruction following skin cancer.

SUMMARY:Advancing Health Work in Progress Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Thrombosis vs. Hemostasis: Balancing the competing risks of bleeding and clotting \nHemostasis is the physiological response to vessel injury that requires activation of the coagulation cascade. This is a highly complex and ‘self-regulating’ series of enzymatic reactions of zymogens that ultimately culminates in the formation of a stable clot. Unfortunately\, an exuberant response can lead to pathological clotting or thrombosis. Other conditions that lead to thrombosis include venous stasis and hypercoagulable states that mobilize other physiological pathways and augment coagulation activation. To reduce thrombosis formation or extension\, anticoagulant therapy is used to inhibit coagulation\, and thereby necessarily renders the patient at risk for excessive bleeding when tissues and vessels are injured. Consequently\, the ‘holy grail’ of finding the ideal anticoagulant has been focused on dissociating these competing risks of bleeding and clotting. \nThis is a virtual event\, please register to receive Zoom link.
