DESCRIPTION:The CMBBE Symposium originated in 1991 in the Engineering Faculty at Swansea University\, Wales\, UK\, a world leader in computational mechanics and it was organised by prof. John Middleton and his team.\nThe first meetings were held starting with 1992 at Swansea. The meetings have developed into a specialised group for those involved in computational biomechanics.  They have changed and evolved  bringing new subject areas to the forefront and have been a useful source of networking.  The meetings have always promoted workshops and special sessions together with making  a point of support for research students and young researchers.\nThrough the years\, CMBBE symposim offered a platform for networking and sharing cutting edge research and projects related computer methods in biomechanics and biomedical engineering.  We invite you now to continue the CMBBE tradition and use the new website to share your news and stay connected in a virtual way.

DESCRIPTION:The Sector Innovation Program (SIP) aims to support strategically important genomics research with long-term potential to address the needs and challenges of key sectors in BC’s economy and society. \nEach intake of the program has a specific strategic focus. The focus of this intake (SIP8) is to support genomics research related to the impacts of climate change on human health. Climate change is already negatively impacting human health in many ways\, and health risks are predicted to increase as global warming continues. Higher temperatures\, shifts in precipitation patterns\, more frequent and intense heat waves\, and weather events deprive people of clean air\, fresh water\, a safe food supply\, and can influence the prevalence and distribution of infectious diseases. \nThis session will provide an overview of Sector Innovation Program Guidelines\, how to apply for Intake 08 and answer any questions you may have.

SUMMARY:Bennett Lecture—Dr. Olivera Finn on Cancer Vaccines
DESCRIPTION:GrasPods presents the Bennett Distinguised lEcture: Vaccines for Cancer Prevention and Interception by Dr. Olivia (Olja) J. Finn from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. \nOver three decades of tumor antigen discovery yielded a large number of tumor antigens that led to the development of therapeutic cancer vaccines designed to slow the growth of primary tumors or metastases. However\, clinical trials failed to demonstrate beneficial effects of therapeutic vaccines\, and studies of the tumor microenvironment revealed multiple mechanisms of tumor-induced immune suppression that compromised vaccine efficacy. \nWe are using the same vaccines in healthy\, immunocompetent individuals to prevent cancer or intercept progression from pro-cancer to cancer. Results of the clinical trials will be presented that test a vaccine based on the tumor antigen MUCI for the prevention of colon\, lung\, and breast cancer. I have self-funded 3 songs from the album (https://linktr.ee/dr.marissalithopoulos) and am eager to continue to share my scientific knowledge with the world through song. There is a long tradition of learning through music – the alphabet\, counting\, and learning where midnight trains go (anywhere). I aim to continue this tradition! \nYour Host: \nDr. Marissa Lithopoulos is a Postdoctoral Fellow at SickKids & UBC\, specializing in brain stem cell research. To survive the stress of grad school\, Marissa began singing and playing the guitar. She also trained in the art of comedy through The Improv Centre & Blind Tiger Comedy. \nMarissa is excited to combine science\, comedy\, & music into a medley! \nThe show includes : \n5 hilarious Vancouver-based comedians: \n-Chloe Lobel \n-Scott Mason \n-Cory Martin \n-Taylor Trowbridge \n-Dr.Mansum Yau \nA panel of distinguished scientists: \n-Dr. Anna Blakney is an Assistant Professor at UBC focused on translating RNA delivery technologies to the clinic. Dr. Blakney is also a science communication expert (some may say a TikTok superstar). \n-Dr. Annie Ciernia is an Assistant Professor at UBC focused on gaining a better understanding of modications made to DNA within different brain cell types. Dr. Ciernia is also a key UBC advocate for equity\, diversity\, & inclusion. (Fun fact: Dr. Ciernia studies one of the coolest cell types – microglia – immune cells found in the brain). \n-Dr. Nicholas Weilinger is Chief Scientific Officer & Co-Founder of Cere Cura Nanotherapeutics. Dr. Weillinger will provide us with industry perspective on some of the important challenges facing science today. \nTo top it all off\, Marissa will be singing her smash hit science tunes throughout the evening!
