SUMMARY:Empowering Research: A Guide to UBC Faculty of Medicine's Data Management Platforms
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, speakers from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Digital Solutions Research Technology team will give a high-level overview of all the data management resources available for researchers at VCHRI. They will introduce platforms such as FoM REDcap for electronic data collection\, OpenSpecimen for biobanking and Microsoft PowerBI for data visualization. Attendees will also learn about interesting use cases\, from observational registries to research registries and everything in between\, hosted on FoM data platforms. \nLearning objectives\nIn this workshop you will learn: \n– Introduction to FoM research data platforms available to VCHRI researchers and their teams \n– Overview of data management best practices related to FoM research data platforms \n– Research data management support services available from the FoM data management team \nThis workshop is part of our VCHRI Research Training Series. This series is designed to support the acquisition of advanced skills\, techniques and knowledge and lead to enhanced practices in the conduct of research. \nAbout the speakers\nKenny Hammond has been working in medical education and research since 2009. In 2015\, he began working with digital solutions and became manager of the research data services team in 2022. Kenny strives to engage with clients to find technological solutions to support their research needs. He has a Master in Public Health and a Graduate Diploma in Community Health\, both from Memorial University.\n  \n  \n  \n  \nAshley McKerrow is an experienced data management professional with over 12 years of experience supporting health research. She began her career at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute where she built a successful team to support full research data services. Under her leadership\, the data management team facilitated hundreds of active research studies and is recognized by peers as a standard for data management processes and documentation.

SUMMARY:World Health Organization Guidance for Best Practices for Clinical Trials
DESCRIPTION:Clinical trials have a central role in generating the evidence needed to inform the development and implementation of health interventions. This is because they can reliably determine whether a health intervention has any effect by ensuring that any biases or random errors inherent in the study design are small with respect to the expected treatment effect. The results have been transformative in advancing global public health. \nThe intent of the ‘World Health Organization guidance for best practices for clinical trials’ document is to support implementation of universal ethical and scientific standards and strengthen the clinical trial ecosystem\, with a focus on under-represented populations. It is also complementary to other good clinical practice initiatives. \nJoin us for an overview presentation on the WHO document which spans all regions and nations and is applicable across all health product lines: any design\, health intervention\, purpose\, setting and role. \nTarget audience: \nAny clinical trial staff member whose work is related to clinical trials in any way. This includes in planning\, conduct\, analysis\, oversight\, interpretation\, education and funding of all clinical trials in which randomization is used to assess the effects of any health intervention for any purpose in any setting. \nLearning objectives \nThe learner will be able to: \n\nhave an awareness of the main issues and steps required to facilitate good clinical trials and reduce waste\,\nidentify the qualities of a well-designed\, well-implemented and clinically relevant trial\,\nuse a framework and tools to self-evaluate whether a team has adequate infrastructure ( physical and trial personnel) required to conduct an efficient high-quality trial\,\nlist the competencies that should be demonstrated by a clinical research team to undertake a successful study\,\nlead a discussion on the strenuous efforts needed to recruit diverse populations to clinical trials.

Sit back\, relax\, and watch as our competitors battle to achieve science communication fame and glory while learning something new in to kick off the fall season. \nWhat exactly is a science slam? Based on the format of a poetry slam\, a science slam is a competition where speakers gather to share their science with you – the audience. Competitors have five minutes to present on any science topic without the use of a slideshow and are judged based on communication skills\, audience impact and scientific content. Learn about their network of nodes and hubs\, world-class data management and training programs that equip researchers with essential tools and skills. \nWhat you’ll learn in this session: \n\nWhat ELIXIR is and why it exists\nExamples of impact that could not have happened without ELIXIR\nTransferable learnings from the establishment of ELIXIR that could be implemented in Canada\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSign Me Up!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Our Speaker\n\n\n\nDr. Tim Hubbard\nDirector\, ELIXIR \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTim Hubbard has recently been appointed Director of ELIXIR\, a European intergovernmental organization that coordinates and develops life science resources across 23 countries\, enabling researchers to find\, analyze\, and share data efficiently. He is a Professor of Bioinformatics at King’s College London\, and was previously Senior Advisor at Genomics England\, and an Associate Director at Health Data Research UK (HDR UK). \nFrom 2013 Tim was seconded to Genomics England\, contributing to the 100\,000 Genomes Project and implementing the Trusted Research Environment (TRE) approach for secure data analysis. He also led TRE policy work at HDR UK\, now a member of ELIXIR UK. The TRE approach has now been formally adopted by NHS England as the default for all health data. \nBefore 2013 Tim was Head of Informatics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute\, where he played a key role in sequencing the human genome. He co-founded the Ensembl project and led the GENCODE project to annotate human genes. \nTim holds a biochemistry degree from the University of Cambridge\, a PhD in protein design from Birkbeck College\, University of London\, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Protein Engineering Research Institute in Osaka.

SUMMARY:UBC Faculty of Medicine REDCap Beginner’s Workshop
DESCRIPTION:REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a web-based software that is used to create and manage research databases and participant surveys. It was developed as a tool to help researchers collect and manage data effectively and responsibly\, integrated with biobanking and data visualization software. In this overview of REDCap\, attendees will be encouraged to follow along as speakers from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine (FoM) Digital Solutions Research Technology team demo how to add new forms\, instruments and fields to a project. \nLearning objectives\nIn this workshop you will learn: \n– Fundamentals of creating data collection forms using REDCap \n– How to acquire the skills to design a basic project \n– How to collect data\, generate reports and export data \n– How to manage a project by making modifications and ensuring data integrity \nAbout the speakers\nYeram Ko is a data coordinator with the digital solutions team. With five years of experience in international humanitarian work\, she shifted her focus to data management within charities and non-governmental organizations in 2018 and pursued a Bachelor of Science in computer science at UBC. Yeram joined FoM as a database developer for the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) in 2022 before beginning her work with digital solutions in 2023.\n \nAnastasia Dropol is team lead of data management on the digital solutions team. With seven years of clinical research experience in pediatric rare diseases\, Anastasia transitioned to research data management in 2018. She provided comprehensive support for clinical\, lab\, and translational research data management within PHSA. Since joining UBC in 2021\, Anastasia has been dedicated to helping researchers at FoM find digital solutions for their varied research needs.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a day of trainee talks\, faculty speakers\, poster presentations\, lunch\, social and more!!! \nGuest Speaker: Kym M Boycott\nSenior Scientist\, CHEO Research Institute \nKym Boycott is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Ottawa in Canada\, where she is a Clinical Geneticist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO)\, Chair of the Department of Genetics\, and a Senior Scientist at the CHEO Research Institute. Dr. Boycott is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Rare Disease Precision Health whose research program bridges clinical genomics to basic research and is focused on understanding the molecular pathogenesis of rare diseases to improve patient care and family well-being. She leads the national Care4Rare Canada Consortium integrating genomic and other –omic technologies to improve our understanding of rare disease\, with a particular focus on solving the unsolved and most difficult rare diseases. To leverage these discoveries\, she co-leads the Canadian Rare Diseases: Models & Mechanisms Network\, established to catalyze connections between newly discovered rare disease genes and basic scientists who can rapidly study them in model systems. Globally\, she moves the rare disease agenda forward as part of the Global Commission to End the Diagnostic Odyssey for Children. \nFaculty Speaker: Francesca Capon\nDepartment of Medical Genetics\, Senior Scientist\, Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics (CMMT) \nFrancesca Capon obtained a BSc in biological sciences (1992) and PhD in medical genetics (1999) from La Sapienza\, University of Rome\, Italy. Her interest in the genetics of psoriasis brought her to the United Kingdom. She first moved to the University of Leicester as a Wellcome Trust Traveling Research Fellow (2001)\, then took on a Lectureship in human molecular genetics at University College London (2004). She joined King’s College London in 2006 as a lecturer\, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014\, and to Reader (Associate Professor) in 2018. In 2022\, she was elected to Professor at King’s College London. Her main research interest is the genetic basis of psoriasis. In recent years\, the Capon Lab has been concentrating on two main research lines: the identification of disease genes in pustular forms of psoriasis and the role of interleukin-36 in the pathogenesis of pustular and plaque psoriasis. This research has been published in high-impact journals including the American Journal of Human Genetics\, the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology\, and Science Translational Medicine.
