Job Summary

The Education Program Manager is responsible for leading the research, development, coordination, evaluation, and implementation of educational programs at the Centre for Blood Research (CBR). They strive to meet the training, education, and professional learning needs of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate trainees, and other research scholars at the Centre. The individual contributes their creativity, project coordination and relationship building skills to fostering a vibrant learning environment where scientists at all career stages can reach their full potential. The individual manages the delivery of programs in both online and in-person formats. They will also develop and implement public education and outreach activities to engage with the broader community.

Organizational Status
The CBR is a UBC Senate approved, virtual, multidisciplinary, translational research centre, located at UBC. With its headquarters at the Life Sciences Centre on Point Grey campus, the CBR comprises approximately 40 groups led by principal investigators – fundamental scientists and clinicians – on campus and at the affiliated teaching hospitals (VGH, SPH, BCCH, BCCA). The position of Education Program Manager reports to the Director of the CBR and works closely with the CBR Office Manager and Communications Coordinator on some initiatives. This position will also interact with various CBR faculty, staff and students, as well as other research and education-related centres, departments, institutes and units throughout UBC.

Work Performed

  • Manages the development, marketing and delivery of educational and award programs at CBR, including the Graduate Award Program and Undergraduate Summer Studentship Program. Plans, develops and oversees trainee-related activities for three annual research symposia.
  • Responsible for implementation and ongoing evaluation of all educational programs, ensuring that timeliness of program content, deadlines, capacity and mode of delivery are optimal. In consultation with CBR members and with direction from the Director, develops appropriate evaluation criteria and tools for program assessment, and performs periodic needs assessments.
  • Collects data and conducts surveys on all areas of program activities for evaluation of program effectiveness. Analyzes post-program evaluations and program participant feedback to improve existing programs and to implement effective programs in the future.
    Provides operational and project management support to various trainee groups, including the Health & Wellness Committee and Outreach Committee.
  • Encourages the development of new trainee-led initiatives and collaboratively organizes research training, professional and career development, experiential learning, wellbeing and outreach activities with teams. Examples of initiatives include career panels, networking events, transferrable skills building sessions, tours of CBR laboratories and school outreach visits.
  • Identifies facilitators and speakers for educational activities (e.g., skills development workshops, facility tours, networking sessions), coordinates activity logistics, co-creates learning content, and ensures all needs are met for success.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with other related centres, departments, and organizations to co-organize new training, educational and outreach initiatives, and leverage resources.
  • Identifies areas of growth and innovation for new programming, creates new opportunities for CBR members and executes on proposed plans. Prior to execution, ensures the initiative also advances one or more of the actions outlined under the goals of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Strategic Plan, UBC Wellbeing Strategic Framework, and UBC Inclusion Action Plan.
  • Identifies relevant on-campus and external learning, mentoring and community engagement opportunities and communicates them to CBR members frequently via email, listservs, and in person.
  • Maintains appropriate communications with external stakeholders and assists with fundraising opportunities, including preparing funding applications, proposals, and reports.
  • Assists the Director, Office Manager and Communications Coordinator with coordination and delivery of weekly seminars and three annual research symposia.
  • Tracks and maintains contact with CBR alumni to monitor career progress. Records and analyzes placement outcomes to improve support for future trainees.
  • Develops a digital learning repository for CBR members, curating training, wellbeing, professional development and career exploration resources, and updating content as needed.
  • Liaises with the Communications Coordinator to promote CBR programs, events and activities.
  • Advises Communications Coordinator on education-related marketing and communications strategy, including marketing collateral and communications plan.
  • Promotes CBR at appropriate venues and conferences.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Works with considerable autonomy, under general guidance from the CBR Director, and exercises considerable judgement in carrying out projects and respectfully dealing with a diverse group of important stakeholders. Makes significant independent decisions and recommendations in areas of planning, organizing and scheduling of work. Must exercise tact and diplomacy when interacting with faculty, staff, students, alumni, industry partners, community organizations, and other internal and external stakeholders. Poor judgment or ineffective communication within the Centre and with community partners could result in strained relations that compromise programs, and impact the Centre’s reputation and program funding.

Supervision Received
Works independently under broad guidelines and under a high level of accountability. Consults with the CBR Director, Office Manager and Communications Coordinator. The incumbent is expected to take initiative, problem solve, determine course of action and follow through.

May be responsible for overseeing work of program assistants, student staff, and support staff, including providing ongoing performance feedback.

Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Degree in science discipline is ideal. Preferred experience in any of the following areas: educational programming development and delivery, including assessment and evaluation; project management; employer/alumni engagement; career education; community outreach; and fundraising.

  • Experience in event planning and workshop facilitation in virtual, in-person, and hybrid modalities is an asset.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and evaluating in-person and online workshops and programs.
  • Exceptional ability to engage, motivate, and build rapport with a diversity community, including students, staff, and faculty.
  • Effective oral and written communication, presentation, interpersonal, problem solving and organization skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, manage multiple tasks and priorities, adapt, and work effectively without supervision.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information, and make decisions independently.
  • Demonstrated capacity for innovation, idea generation, research, analysis, strategic thinking, budget and project management.
  • Proven ability to work successfully and effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals, including researchers, students, staff, faculty, alumni, community organizations, and industry partners.
  • Experience creating a diverse and inclusive environment that brings together different ideas, experiences, skills and knowledge. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
  • Ability to exercise a high level of tact, discretion, and judgement.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.

  • Familiarity with WordPress, Qualtrics, and video conferencing platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams).
  • Familiarity with needs and attitudes of local and international trainees, faculty, employers and career development professionals.
