Bennett Lecture—Dr. Olivera Finn on Cancer Vaccines
August 6 - 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
FreeGrasPods presents the Bennett Distinguised lEcture: Vaccines for Cancer Prevention and Interception by Dr. Olivia (Olja) J. Finn from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
Over three decades of tumor antigen discovery yielded a large number of tumor antigens that led to the development of therapeutic cancer vaccines designed to slow the growth of primary tumors or metastases. However, clinical trials failed to demonstrate beneficial effects of therapeutic vaccines, and studies of the tumor microenvironment revealed multiple mechanisms of tumor-induced immune suppression that compromised vaccine efficacy.
We are using the same vaccines in healthy, immunocompetent individuals to prevent cancer or intercept progression from pro-cancer to cancer. Results of the clinical trials will be presented that test a vaccine based on the tumor antigen MUCI for the prevention of colon, lung, and breast cancer. The science that underlies the design of these trials will also be presented.
Followed by a social from 4:30 PM onwards at Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar!
