Genome BC’s Data Literacy Series: Unlocking Bioinformatics

Join us for the next session in Genome BC’s Data Literacy series, where we’ll explore ELIXIR, Europe’s premier intergovernmental organization dedicated to advancing life sciences through bioinformatics infrastructure. Tim Hubbard, the director of ELIXIR and a renowned expert in bioinformatics, will present how ELIXIR’s innovative initiatives foster collaboration and drive scientific breakthroughs.

About Our Speaker

Dr. Tim Hubbard
Director, ELIXIR

Tim HubbardTim Hubbard has recently been appointed Director of ELIXIR, a European intergovernmental organization that coordinates and develops life science resources across 23 countries, enabling researchers to find, analyze, and share data efficiently. He is a Professor of Bioinformatics at King’s College London, and was previously Senior Advisor at Genomics England, and an Associate Director at Health Data Research UK (HDR UK).

From 2013 Tim was seconded to Genomics England, contributing to the 100,000 Genomes Project and implementing the Trusted Research Environment (TRE) approach for secure data analysis. He also led TRE policy work at HDR UK, now a member of ELIXIR UK. The TRE approach has now been formally adopted by NHS England as the default for all health data.

Before 2013 Tim was Head of Informatics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, where he played a key role in sequencing the human genome. He co-founded the Ensembl project and led the GENCODE project to annotate human genes.

Tim holds a biochemistry degree from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in protein design from Birkbeck College, University of London, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Protein Engineering Research Institute in Osaka.
