Investment Banking for Life Sciences – Job Simulation

Event Summary

Have you ever wondered how biotech startups get their funding or how they identify monetization strategies for their products? Have you heard of investment banks but unsure how they decide which project to fund? This workshop will focus on the role of investment banks and venture capital groups in getting scientific research funded and out in the public.

Dr. Evelyn Pau will shed light on internal processes in investment banking, walk you through key steps in project evaluations, and give you a taste of what you might have to do as an analyst in an investment banking industry for life sciences. Attendees will learn skills and resources to perform an opportunity assessment by conducting scientific, medical, and clinical due diligence, market overview and sizing, competitive landscape, and other topics to better understand the business case. Attendees will conduct an assignment on Day 1 and share findings on Day 2.

The Science to Business Network (www.s2bn.org) was founded 10 years ago to break down silos between universities, industry, government and the non-profit sector and to foster a culture of collaboration, partnership and mutual understanding. Importantly, the S2BN has been focused on building a network of innovative and creative individuals within and around STEM disciplines. Through panel discussions, workshops, mentoring programs, a podcast and other collaborative initiatives, the S2BN now has 9 chapters across Canada led by more than 70 grassroots volunteers whose activities now reach more than 2500 people a year.

Evelyn Pau, PhD
Vice President, Investment Banking and Recruiting Lead
Bloom Burton

Evelyn Pau, Vice President, Investment Banking and Recruiting Lead joined Bloom Burton & Co. as an Analyst in November 2012. At Bloom Burton, her responsibilities include monetization planning, strategy consulting, and scientific, clinical and medical due diligence for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and healthcare companies. Evelyn also heads Bloom Burton’s recruiting and talent management efforts as the Recruiting Lead.

Prior to joining Bloom Burton, Evelyn was a business development analyst at Tornado Medical Systems (now Tornado Spectral Systems) and a research fellow at SECOR Consulting (now KPMG). Evelyn completed her PhD in Immunology at the University of Toronto, specializing in genetics and autoimmunity, and her Bachelor of Medical Sciences Honours in Microbiology and Immunology at Western University.

Currently, Evelyn serves on the Board of Directors of the McMaster Innovation Park.
