SFU CAFE SCIENTIFIQUE: The Lungpacer System

While mechanical ventilation (MV) is a last-resort life-saving therapy for critically ill patients, it comes with serious side effects. The Lungpacer System is designed to electrically activate the diaphragm and strengthen the weakened muscle, so that the patient can be weaned off MV and resume natural breathing. Dr. Andy Hoffer from SFU’s Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology will speak on the reasons why so many ICU patients fail to wean from MV, the encouraging results from a multicenter trial using the Lungpacer System, and how it is now used to liberate patients who survived COVID-19 but remain dependent on MV.
