Summer 2024 Visual Communication Mini-Workshop
July 23 - 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
FreeLead: Samantha Grist, PhD. Research Associate with Prof. Karen Cheung, Prof. Sudip Shekhar, Prof. Lukas Chrostowski (UBC ECE and SBME).
Date and time: July 23, Part 1 lecture: 11:00 am-12:30 pm. Part 2 hands-on (attendance capped): 2:00-4:00 pm. Please register in advance via the links below, as attendance will be capped (first-come-first-served registration).
Part 1: The lecture will give a brief introduction to effective presentations and why visual communication is important, before introducing key concepts for effective visual communication and scientific figures from the book “Visual Strategies” by Felice Frankel and Angela DePace. After introducing these concepts and examples, Samantha will then go through a couple of examples of how she has applied these strategies to improve an example figure from her previous publications, as well as some tips that she has learned along the way. At the end of the lecture we will have a Q&A session and practice giving feedback on another example figure. Sign up here.
Part 2: The focus of this session will be to practice both giving feedback and getting feedback on one of your in-progress figures (e.g., for a journal paper, presentation, poster), as well as learning how to implement some of the concepts that were introduced in the Part 1 lecture using a vector-based design program. Please note that all participants must submit a figure in advance of the workshop, in order to participate in Part 2. Sign up here and submit figure and contextual information here.
