Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre (GSC) is a state-of-the-art, large scale, high throughput, clinically accredited genomics and bioinformatics facility. If you have a PhD degree in a life sciences or quantitative discipline and experience with lab research, along with an interest in genomics and improving cancer care, you could become an integral member of our team.

The GSC’s Evgin lab is seeking a Research Associate. The Evgin lab uses mouse models of cancer to investigate the in vivo interplay between the immune system and cancer. Specifically, the team is interested in how the function and plasticity chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells are regulated by the tumour microenvironment, and how to leverage combination therapy (including oncolytic viruses and vaccines) and CRISPR editing to overcome these challenges. We are looking for a motivated, creative, and meticulous individual who has a strong understanding of molecular biology and immunology to contribute to our research program.

Duties

• Perform experiments that include basic molecular and biochemical bench-work, generate plasmids and produce retrovirus/lentivirus, and perform cell culture of mouse and human cells.
• Follow detailed, time-sensitive and challenging protocols to generate lymphoma mouse models and adoptive transfer experiments.
• Conduct flow-based immunologic phenotyping experiments and tumor measurements by a variety of in vivo and ex vivo approaches.
• Maintain banks of cell lines, plasmids, viruses (etc).
• Work with team members and collaborators regarding data generation and project coordination.
• General laboratory management such as maintenance of supplies and inventory.
• Contribute to scientific publications, patents, and funding proposals.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

• PhD degree in a life sciences or quantitative discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A Minimum of three (3) years of recent related experience in a research laboratory.

Skills & Abilities

• A strong background in molecular biology including DNA isolation/purification, construct design and cloning is required.
• Experience working with primary immune cells and along with CRISPR-based genetic engineering is desirable.
• Experience with flow cytometry and standard immunologic techniques is desirable.
• Experience with retrovirus, lentivirus, VSV or vaccinia based viral vectors is desirable.
• Experience with mouse handling and injections is helpful.
• Outstanding organization skills, attention to detail, as well as the ability to maintain detailed documentation is required.
• Experience using graphing programs such as Prism, Excel, etc.
• Ability to collaborate proficiently and communicate effectively with colleagues and management teams.
• Ability to contribute in a meaningful way to scientific discourse.
• Ability to think critically and learn independently.
