UBC’s Faculty of Medicine Has Most Highly Cited Researchers among Canadian Medical Schools

By November 27, 2017No Comments

The UBC Faculty of Medicine has ten members on the 2017 list of Highly Cited Researchers  — the most of any Canadian medical school.

The list is based on Clarivate Analytics’ compilation of highly cited papers, which are defined as those ranking in the top 1 per cent by citations in that field and year of publication in the Web of Science. Researchers who, within their defined field, published Highly Cited Papers between 2005 and 2015 were judged to be influential, so the production of multiple top 1 per cent papers was interpreted as a mark of exceptional impact.

The University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine had the second-highest number of Highly Cited Researchers, with seven members appearing on the list.

The members of the Faculty of Medicine included in this year’s list were:

Michael Brauer, a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health;

Joseph Connors, Clinical Professor in the Division of Medical Oncology, in the Department of Medicine, and a Medical Oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency;

Howard Feldman, Affiliate Professor in the Division of Neurology, in the Department of Medicine and Dean for Alzheimer’s and Related Neurodegenerative Research at University of California San Diego School of Medicine;

Lawrence Frank, a Professor in the School of Population and Public Health;

Randy Gascoyne, a retired Clinical Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Distinguished Scientist, BC Cancer Research Centre;

Karen Gelmon, a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Medical Oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency (and a new addition to the list);

Ian Mackenzie, a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Head of the Division of Neuropathology at Vancouver General Hospital;

Marco Marra, Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Genetics and Director of the Genome Science Centre at the BC Cancer Agency;

John Webb, a Clinical Professor in the Division of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine and a Cardiologist at St. Paul’s Hospital;

Lakshmi Yatham, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Regional Head of Psychiatry for Vancouver Coastal Health and Providence Healthcare.
