By October 16, 2018No Comments

On behalf of Dr. Francois Bénard, Vice President Research and Dr. Pamela Hoodless, Director, Terry Fox Laboratory,

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Florian Kuchenbauer, a newly appointed Clinician-Scientist, to the Terry Fox Laboratory and the Leukemia/Bone Marrow Transplant Program of BC.

Florian received his MD degree in 2001 from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Germany. He then completed his MD research fellow training and his PhD degree in Experimental Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) under Dr. Keith Humphries’s supervision at BC Cancer’s Terry Fox Laboratory in 2009. After that, he returned to Germany to complete his clinical training in Hematology/Oncology and to establish his independent research laboratory at the University of Ulm. As a physician, he specializes in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in adults. Over the past four years, he has been working in the stem cell transplantation unit of the University Hospital Ulm, Germany, and developed a clinical interest in optimizing conditioning regimens as well as thrombotic microangiopathy (TA-TMA) during HSCT. His research focuses on non-coding RNAs, especially microRNAs (miRNAs) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and normal hematopoiesis, and he has made significant contributions to the field over the past decade. His expertise in AML and stem cell transplantation is of great value to BC Cancer both as a researcher and a clinician,  and he aims to establish a translational bone marrow transplantation research program.

Dr. Kuchenbauer’s recruitment was made possible by major commitments from multiple partners including PHSA, BC  Cancer Foundation, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and UBC. Starting with BC Cancer officially in September 2018, he has already started setting up his laboratory and orienting into his new clinical roles, working in full gear towards his goal to establish a translational bone marrow transplantation research program. With his Associate Professor position at UBC, he will also utilize his expertise in stem cell transplantation and AML to continue teaching and supervising students and fellows in medicine and research.

For more information on Dr. Kuchenbauer’s research and clinical programs, please visit his profile page on the Terry Fox Laboratory website.
